New Year, Same Fabulous IGBONY!

2021 is going to be my year.

I said it of 2020. I will say it of 2022. I will say it for every year I am blessed to see.

Here at IGBONY HQ the New Year was a crossover; an opportunity to cleanse of the previous year and to ask for positivity and pleasure in the new one.

As 2020 turned back into a pumpkin, we had already planned a year of activity; month by month decisions of what to do, planning how to get to the end of 2021 with fireworks and champagne.

How can you possibly arrive somewhere without knowing what you are there for?

So what is IGBONY here for? The idea behind IGBONY is to allow people of all shapes and sizes, the opportunity to dress up and feel as phenomenal as they truly deserve to. The “one-size-fits-nobody” approach to clothing that we have been presented with by various fast fashion brands over the years, is not working.

Throughout the centuries Western beauty standards and ideals have changed expeditiously. In the 1700’s women were heavily corseted; this trend peaked in the 19th Century, but by which was on yet another incarnation of the perfect silhouette.

Eventually corsetry fell out of favour due to the detrimental effects on the health of long-term wearers however, the female form was no less open to scrutiny and molding in the name of what was in vogue.

Between 1900 and 2000...

Between 1900 and 2000 women were expected to adapt their natural bodies to fit the ever-changing fashion of the decade.

It started with the shapely Gibson Girl of the 1910’s, before very suddenly flipping to the Flappers we all know and love of the Great Gatsby era, 1920’s.

From there onwards, the shape and size of the female form fluctuated literally up and down, with each new decade until the 1960’s, when slender model Twiggy took the world by storm in the advent of global liberation.

Globalisation & Consumerism

Globalisation and consumerism were sold to the masses, and so with it came increased advertising which pushed the narrative of one body shape for all.

After the 1960’s women were expected to slip into spandex like 1970’s disco divas, be as fit as Jane Fonda in the 1980’s (she’s still a babe), aspire to the heroin chic look of the 90’s supermodels and develop washboard abs like every woman singer of the noughties.

I can’t keep up and all I have to do is write about it.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing. As we have been able to reflect on the historically unhealthy expectations placed on the bodies of women, we are moving forward.

We are throwing the cis male gaze to the wind. We are doing us. That means doing what allows us to feel comfortable, in the bodies we have been gifted during our tenancy in this life. That means body positivity. That means loving yourself in your nude. Loving the various shades, shapes, patterns and blocks of our bodies.

I woke up this morning in love with my body, because it’s beautiful and nobody else has a body like mine. Say that sentence back to yourself out loud. And again. And once more with feeling. Feels good right?!

Future things to look out for

History lesson over and by now everyone should be feeling good about themselves. Here are some future things to look out for this year. IGBONY has again teamed up with photographer and stylist @kechyourstyle, to present you with the amazing imaginings from the mind of our design team. The first samples from Collection 2 are being sewn as we speak, so if you are following our stories on Instagram you would have seen our previews. A survey was sent out to a selection of people and we used their feedback to help us with our designs. We are working towards style and comfort this year; wide-leg trousers because #thickthighssavelives. Wrap dresses when spring has sprung, because my little lockdown belly is nobody else’s business! And lest we forget, shoulder pads because let the drama come from my outfit, not my life!

As with every year there are annual occasions that cannot be missed pandemic or not; Birthdays, Christmas, and Easter - we have something exciting in store for each. IGBONY’s 3rd anniversary will be this year, which according to sources means presents of leather (vegan of course). We are working on facilitating a socially distanced Easter Egg Hunt, but for now in the words of Chris Witty “stay home, protect the NHS so we can party later."

So what have we achieved in 2020? There is no correct answer to this. There is no right and there is no wrong, actually it can be quite difficult to even find anything to say in response. In other years we may have stopped
